Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appointed Royal Oak resident Ian Hickman to the Michigan Board of Nursing. Hickman, an attorney, will serve as a public member on the state panel that oversees nursing licenses and professional standards.

His term began Thursday, Oct. 1, and runs through June 30, 2030, according to the Legal News. He succeeds Joseph Thurston, whose term expired. The appointment is subject to the Senate’s advice and consent, according to the governor’s announcement.

Hickman is an attorney at Southfield-based Hewson & Van Hellemont, P.C., a firm founded in 1991, according to the firm’s website. He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Michigan and a law degree from Wayne State University.

The Legal News described Hickman's seat as a public-member position.

The Michigan Board of Nursing operates under the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). The board oversees nursing licensure, sets professional standards and enforces compliance with Michigan's Public Health Code. LARA investigates complaints, while the board’s disciplinary subcommittee reviews disciplinary matters. Sanctions can include reprimands, suspension or license revocation, according to LARA’s explanation of the complaint process.

Hickman's appointment was part of a broader round of gubernatorial appointments that included seats on tax, occupational therapy, child welfare and law enforcement standards boards. The governor’s office announced the appointments Oct. 1.
