Berkley’s boys tennis team finished ninth with 10 points at the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 2 state finals Oct. 23-24 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

The official tournament results give the Bears a second consecutive top-10 finish. Berkley tied for 10th in 2025 after placing 15th in 2024, according to a March profile in The Jewish News.

Junior Evan Weber entered the finals at No. 1 singles with a 21-2 record, according to the MHSAA’s tournament preview.

His losses before the finals came against Birmingham Seaholm’s Carter Griffith and Brother Rice’s Ryan Brockhaus, who competed in Division 1. Weber defeated Griffith in a regional rematch.

Berkley had entrants in all eight flights, according to MLive’s bracket preview. Eliot Hopkins played No. 2 singles, Simon Babcock played No. 3 and Jordan Serlin played No. 4.

The doubles lineup included Wesley MacDonald and Asa Somers at No. 1; Ira Retish and Alden Ritter at No. 2; Jake Ingber and Ari Schindler at No. 3; and Joseph Dauphin and Vinnie Holder at No. 4.

Birmingham Seaholm repeated as team champion with 35 points. Midland Dow finished second with 25, followed by Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern with 24, according to the MHSAA championship recap.

Berkley’s recent state appearances have come under Sam Subia and Aaron Rosen. The Jewish News reported that Subia, a Berkley graduate, was named a 2025 Regional Coach of the Year by the Michigan High School Tennis Association in his fourth year coaching the Bears.

Subia also competed at the state tournament as a player. As a senior in 2012, he reached the Division 2 No. 4 singles semifinals, playing three consecutive three-set matches, according to the newspaper. Berkley finished 10th that year.

In the March profile, Subia said he and Rosen wanted to make Berkley a regular state qualifier and competitive against Oakland County opponents.
