Royal Oak Public Library will close for four days starting Friday, Oct. 30, for a new boiler installation.
The library at 222 E. Eleven Mile Road will be shut through Monday, Nov. 2, according to The Oakland Press. The building is scheduled to reopen Tuesday, Nov. 3. The library’s website also confirms the closure dates.
Return boxes will be locked throughout the closure, so patrons cannot drop off materials during that period. Items due during those four days can be returned when the library reopens. The library does not charge late fees.
This is the second shutdown tied to a full heating, ventilation and air conditioning system overhaul. The library also closed Oct. 9-12 for earlier equipment work, according to its event calendar.
The $1.02 million project is funded by the 2023 library millage, The Oakland Press reported. The new system is expected to cut energy use by roughly 27% to 35% and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 120 to 160 metric tons per year, the outlet reported.
Solar panels were installed on the library’s roof earlier in 2026 and are expected to save about $28,000 a year, according to C&G News. An interactive display showing real-time solar production is planned for later this year, The Oakland Press reported.
“We hope this will be the last closure before the colder weather hits,” Library Director Sandy Irwin said, according to The Oakland Press.
Irwin thanked patrons for their patience, calling the upgrades “a massive undertaking that we know will be worth it.”
The city also was awarded a $100,000 grant for solar panels on the Jack and Patti Salter Community Center, according to The Oakland Press.
