The Royal Oak Public Library will close for four days starting Friday, Oct. 9, to install three new boilers, according to the library’s announcement.

The library is at 222 E. Eleven Mile Road.

The library stays closed through Monday, Oct. 12. Regular hours resume Tuesday, Oct. 13, according to The Oakland Press.

Return boxes will be locked because no staff will be on site to empty them. The library does not charge late fees, so borrowers can return items once the building reopens, the newspaper reported.

The broader $1.02 million project includes replacing the boilers, chiller and building automation system and is funded by library millage revenue, according to The Oakland Press. Library Director Sandy Irwin said the upgrades should cut energy use by roughly 27–35% and shrink carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 120–160 metric tons a year.

A second temporary closure is expected later this fall to finish the work. The newspaper did not provide a date.
